New plugin in the repository – Simple Coming soon is out

UPDATE: Mukul Hinge wrote a great how-to article which explains how to fix your site when coming soon page is still there, even after deactivating the plugin – Read how.

Great example of coming soon page - created by Marko Prljić
Some time ago I was asked to work on two projects for Marko Prljić – very talented designer from Croatia. Both have needed option to show coming soon page in case that user is not logged in.

At first, this feature was solved by adding code into functions.php file, but today the plugin is born. Download it and have nice coming soon page (with countdown) or create the custom one.

Process is very simple:

For now (version 1.0) has only one built-in template (special thanks to Madalin Tudose from ourtuts; also, I’m looking for designer who will donate coming soon template) with countdown option and links to social network profiles – you’ll see on option pages.

If you’re in need to create the custom one, just name it coming-soon.php and place it in active theme’s directory (for ex. public_html/wp-content/themes/my-theme/coming-soon.php).

If you have any problem related to this plugin or need some assistance, ask in a comment and I’ll reply to you as soon as I can.

  1. Thank you for releasing this plugin via WordPress. Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to get it to work.

    I uploaded it as directed. Filled in the setting fields. Logged out of my site. Cleared the cache. But the site still publicly appears.

    Are there plugins or themes that contradict with the plugin code?

    Any ideas? I need to get moving on finishing theme tweaks ASAP.

  2. i cant seem to be able to find the login button when i arrive at wp-admin

    i cant login to my dashboard.

    please advise.

  3. I’m not sure I understand your problem at all, but this should be related with plugin in any way. It just redirect non-logged users on other template.
    Tried typing wp-login.php after domain name?

  4. excuse me for the sloppy explaination

    i installed the plugin and activated it

    it works perfectly fine.

    after login out of the site.

    i tried to go back to the admin login with /wp-admin.php but i was redirected to the maintainance page. and i was not able to find a login option any where. i had to remove the plugin from FTP to login

    maybe you can address this bug

  5. Melv, there is not wp-admin.php. There are wp-admin/ and wp-login.php, but not wp-admin.php. Maybe this is your problem.

  6. Hey, when i try to add a logo that i have stored on my pc it gives me an error. I know it is something I am doing wrong as I am relatively new to this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)

  7. Hey Mario…I`m glad you launched the plugin and I`m happy I could helped you with the Under Construction theme…I`m going to test it now!

    Hope we`ll collaborate in the future too!

    Best Regards!

  8. Okay, I’ve installed and activated the plug-in… at least the WordPress plug-ins page says it’s activated.

    But your instructions only say, “select ‘coming soon’ state and save changes” without mentioning WHERE this setting is located. I don’t see it anywhere in the WordPress settings. What am I missing?

  9. hi mario
    i installed the plugin ok and its on my back admin , now i set it to coming soon and nothing , i have activated it on the plugin , so where do i go to get it to work..i filled in all the theme option etc , but dont know what to press to get it to go to under construction???
    and then please let me know once i have the site all done what do i press do get it to get the site online again
    thanks a million
    jack

    • only thing you have to do is selecting “coming soon” from drop down and hitting “save changes”.
      Are you sure that you have logged out?
      Logged users always see full site, guests see coming soon.

  10. Hi, how to fix this:
    I installed this plugin, activated it, tested how it looks, then deactivated and deleted it and logged off, but under construction scrren appears, only without images?

    How to fix this? How to remove it?

    Thanks

  11. i like this plugin, its pretty slick…..but your instructions on making a custom theme are not very helpful. sure i can edit the one it comes with but saying its easily customized is not exactly true. you say make a file called ‘coming-soon.php’ in your sites theme directory but you didn’t explain HOW to create this file or what goes in it. do i copy a file from the built-in theme? do i put a blank file (didn’t work)? perhaps you should include an example file.

  12. I second that, zoey77.

    Need to create a custom under construction page, but it is unclear how to do this.

    I’ve placed a ‘coming-soon.php’ file in the active theme directory, but no luck.

  13. Installed the plugin, filled out the custom fields. Worked great. Tried to change the fields. No changes. Emptied browser cache. Looked again. No changes. Unintalled plugin. No my site WILL NOT SHOW THE ORIGINAL THEME AT ALL. Just a jumbled version of your ‘under construction’ page. I have even emptied the plugins folder. Emptied the browsers cache. I even looked on a computer that has never been to my site. Still broken.

    WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO GET RID OF THIS ISSUE>

    • You have to use your logic.
      If there is not any trace of my plugin, nothing related can’t be shown.

      So – you’ve emptied the cache, but it seems you have some cache plugins activated.
      Deactivate them!

  14. Hi Mario, great plug in thanks!
    I installed it, works fine.
    I dont want the social buttons, but they do work if i activate them
    But the slider is not working…. i dont see the email option. Maybe its a bug?
    Hope to hear from you soon!
    thanks.

  15. Man, REALLY like this program! EXACTLY what I needed! All up and running. I didn’t want the logo part so I simply cut the logo script out of wp-content/plugins/simple-coming-soon-and-under-construction/themes/ourtuts/index.php I add this as some folks may not have a logo and if you don’t add one it displays the text msg and looks bad.

    Good job!

  16. I just installed this plugin on a brand new site I am developing. I thought I would be able to block the site from public view while it is under development.

    Besides WordPress it self, this is the first and only plugin I have installed on this new site.

    Within 30 minutes of installing this plugin,I am receiving notice of 7 outgoing connections that have been refused.

    Recently Blocked Connections

    does your plugin make outgoing connections?

  17. hi,
    i installed the plugin and it works great, but only problem i am having is i select for the coming soon page to display and i can’t test any pages i’m working on even when logged to the site.

    thanks in advance and great plugin.

  18. Love the plugin. I have one problem though. When I click the social media links they are pre-empted by my own site url and just direct me in a loop. How can I fix this?

  19. Any easy way to edit the count down time’s language?

    ie; 16 Days, 22 Hours, 41 Minutes, and 38 Seconds
    should read;
    16 Jours, 22 Heurs, 41 Minutes, et 38 Secondes

    Thanks

  20. What if i want a custom Coming Soon page? You said just to rename it to coming-soon.php. I have a html page, i renamed it and changed the extension from .html to .php but it doesn’t work. I opened up the htmlpage and simply put php tags around the whole html code, but it still doesn’t work. I’m bot familiar with .php so any help would be appreciated.

  21. Ok, i’ve managed to fix it, it was paths that were wrong, i had the path: “images/undercon.gif”, where it should be:
    “wp-content/themes/theme-name/images/undercon.gif”

    Nice plugin, thank you for sharing!

  22. When trying to see the full site loged the plugin takes me to the Under Construction Page. I cannot preview my site while changing it. What could be the problem?

  23. I cannot find the options page. Where should it normally be? I can find the php code in the editor in plugins section, but there is not an HTML page with drop downs and fields to change options.

    I am running WordPress 3.0.1

  24. Hi!

    Great plugin. I’d love to use it but I have 1 issue. The plugin activates fine but once activated I am unable to view the site while I make corrections to its theme (which is the whole point of the ‘under construction time’). Could you help me understand how I am able to have this plugin activated but also be able to view my site as an administrator. I have tried multiple users all with top admin access and none are able to view it.

    Thanks!

  25. Hi

    I like this plug in. Everything is perfect.

    I need instructions how to translate in my language: Days, Hours, Minutes and Seconds

    Thanks,
    Vlado
    Macedonia

    • Ok, connect to your account (via FTP), browse to plugin’s installation directory ( probably wp-content/plugins/simple-coming-soon-and-under-construction/ ).
      After that, browse directory themes/ourtuts/js.
      Open jquery.countdown.js with your favourite editor and you’ll see (line 7) words you have to replace with your localized phrases.

  26. Hi Mario, thanks for your plugin! I found an error though, the function scs_handle_template() checks for ‘coming-soon.php’ with

    get_template_directory()

    This will not work if you use a framework and a child theme, this function returns the framework dir.

  27. I have another question

    I want to integrate google analythics code in this plugin

    Where should I put google analythics code exactly?

    Thanks,
    Vlado

  28. Hi,

    I was wondering how to change the size of the background image? When it repeats it is showing a part of the image that is not wanted?

  29. I have used this plugin on a couple of websites, really love it. But sometimes, like some of the other comments here, even when I’m logged in, I can’t see the site and the changes I’m making. Could you please let me know how to resolve this issue?

    Thanks in advance!

    • Hi,
      Could it be because specially when you are logged in is when you are not able to see the site disabled. I need to log out every time I want to see the changes.
      Greetings.

  30. Hi Mario, thanks a lot for the plugin!! It’s fantastic.

    I’m a newbie as regards programming, and I’d like to change the font type of the plugin to match the modern style of the website (see logo).
    How can I do that? I’ve been browsing all files under the wordpress plugin editor but haven’t found any font-type command.

    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

  31. Great plugin but…

    After the time expires the site appears. As a suggestion after expiry it should default to the “Expiry text” as a fail-safe if the developer has not reached the deadline? I know you could just increase the time but its a fail-safe right?

    Thanks
    ricbax

    • I totally agree with you. My countdown is a bit off (even though i have set my wordpress time options) and we “launched” a good 12 hours before we were supposed to. I’m sure there is something up with my time settings but it would have been nice to just have the text change to the “expiry text” that I entered.

      To the people who are complaining about having to log out each time you would like to see what you are working on I have a solution for you:

      KEEP TWO BROWSERS OPEN. This not only speeds up things but as you work on your site, you can see how it looks for every type of person who may come across your site later.

      Thanks for the plug-in!

  32. Appreciate an input:

    Am using WordPress 3.1. I noticed your under construction plug-in appears not to be compatible with 3.1. Is that still correct?

    Thanks,

    John

  33. Since it is very handy to have a login link on this plugins page here is what to do.

    Open index.php in a proper editor (like notepad++) and under line 51 add this
    <a href=”http://www.greektech.info/wp-login.php” rel=”nofollow”>Admin Login</a>

    Save and upload to the server. Some might need a bit of time if they have plugins that cache.

    To erase the Your Logo Here thingy for those that do not want it.
    Erase lines 45 to 47. If you do this prior to the solution i said before be careful since all lines will loose the current numbering they have.

    Hope that helps.

  34. Hi Mario! First of all congratulation, it’s really a great plugin, perfect tool for me. :)

    However I tried to add the months (o) in the countdown in ourtuts/index.php :

    $(‘#defaultCountdown’).countdown({until: austDay, layout: ‘{on} {ol}, {dn} {dl}, {hn} {hl}, {mn} {ml}, {sn} {sl}’});

    But I get this on the page : 0 Month, 134 days, .. minutes, .. seconds

    Shouldn’t it be : 4 Months, ..days, ..minutes, ..seconds ?

    What am I missing ?

  35. Hi Mario,

    I like the plugin, which I installed on above website. Unfortunately, when I revisited the site after a week of no activity, the plug-in no longer works. It is still active, it has deleted the logo and background image specified, and doesn’t do anything. Have deactivated and reactivated, but still no luck. Btw, I am viewing in another computer outside the admin panel. I don’t know what has changed – didn’t actually change anything on the site. Any ideas?

  36. If you whant to close your site for all users who are not admin you should change the “scs_handle_template” function in functions.php

    function scs_handle_template($option)
    {
    global $current_user;
    $dir = get_template_directory().’/';

    $user_level = 0;
    /* only non-admin should see coming soon */
    if (is_user_logged_in())
    {
    get_currentuserinfo();
    $user_info = get_userdata($current_user->ID);
    $user_level = $user_info->user_level;
    }
    if($user_level < 10)
    { …

    …another part of function the same as original.

  37. I have changed the options in “General” and “Theme Options” but there is no “Save Changes” button on the bottom. Nothing I change takes effect. What does that mean?

    Thanks

  38. Sorry if this is a dumb question – but I can’t see a save button anywhere. Am I missing something?

  39. I’m new to WP and just install this plugin. I already activate this and change my site state to ‘Coming soon page’. But I can’t see the effect on my website. Am I missing something?

  40. Hello all,

    I need to translate the words in the time remaining area to another language, I looked in the plugin’s files, but do not see where I can change ‘Months’, ‘Days’, ‘Hours’, etc. to the other language.

    I have the Codestyling Localization plugin installed, but the ‘Simple …’ plugin does not show in the settings page for Codestyling Localization.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    TIA … Bill

  41. I filled in all the infos but I cant find the “save changes” button….please help…thank you

  42. So like how the heck do you save any changes, I dont see any javascript saving it and I dont see any save button either….

  43. pretty useless plugin. Thanks for trying though. there is obviously a lack of technical support judging by the comments.

    does not allow logged in admin to preveiw the changes that this plugin is meant to be masking during site build/reconstruction.

    deleting now. 30 mins wasted.

  44. I take my opening remark back, based on previous comments above I remain sceptical as to how long this will work but here was the issue and the fix.

    i had earlier today moved my entire site from a sub domain root directory to a a new root directory under the proper domain. (i had been domain mask forwarding the url to the sub domain)

    Everything went smooth however under Settings>general the wordpress url was still ported to the subdomain. I changed the wordpress url to match the site url (thus the correct root directory) and it works fine for now.

    Hope it carries on working

    thanks
